Obituary and funeral announcement for Marge McClung

McCLUNG, Margie Billups “Marge,” of Richmond, Va., and an exceptional dog person and friend to all animals, passed away November 13, 2015. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. O. W. “Mac” McClung; her parents, James L. Billups and Celeste B. Wirt; and her brother, James L Billups Jr. She leaves behind a stepdaughter, Jerry Person and family; her sister-in-law, Beth Phillips; her nephew, Randy Billups, his wife, Yvonne and their children, a niece, Bonnie Scott and family, her dear friends, Paul Staples, Greg Strong, Pat Dillard, Margie Rivnyak, Brenda Gouldin and Jane Greenwood and so many others.

She and Mac raised world class Welsh Terriers and Miniature Schnauzers. For years, their dogs were shown all over the country. They were fortunate to have had nine Best in Show Welsh Terriers and two Miniature Schnauzers.

She was a department supervisor at Miller and Rhodes for many years. Upon retiring, she worked with Mac at their Veterinary Hospital. Throughout her life, she was an active member of the Virginia Federation of Dog Clubs and Breeders, The American Miniature Schnauzer Club, the Virginia Kennel Club and a Charter Member of the Virginia Terrier Club.

She devoted many years of her life to helping Virginia legislators write quality legislation for purebred dogs. In 2010, Margie was awarded the Good Sportsmanship Award from the American Kennel Club. She spent tremendous time rescuing dogs to good homes.

Margie was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, elected girl of the year, served as president of her chapter and then president of all chapters in Virginia. For several years, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

She will be remembered for her kindness and thoughtfulness to others and will be missed by all who knew her. Family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bliley’s-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., 23224, where a funeral ceremony will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Interment Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. O.W. “Mac” McClung Scholarship Fund, VA-MD College of Veterinary Medicine, Syril Clarke, Office of Development, 225 Duck Pond Dr., Blacksburg, Va. 24061.
