Dog Community Comes Together to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer setup in Houston

The situation in Texas is beyond grim for people, and needless to say, thousands of pets are suffering as well. If you would like to donate to help, we suggest the AKC Reunite Pet Disaster Relief Fund.

AKC already has a couple of its disaster trailers with kennel supplies in the Houston area. AKC Reunite will provide grants to any nonprofit organization (shelters, rescues, etc) providing hands-on care for pets caught in this crisis.

In addition, two AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers are being donated to the Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston.  The AKC Humane Fund trailer will be delivered on September 5. The second trailer will be delivered soon after thanks to the generous donations received by the AKC Reunite Pet Disaster Relief Fund. AKC Reunite is also donating an additional $4,500 worth of microchipping products to the shelter: 250 microchips with prepaid enrollments and 20 QuickScan microchip scanners, making the total Harris County Animal Shelter donation a value of $48,500. The AKC Humane Fund has also donated $10,000 to the City of Houston.

Bob Amen, AKC board member, and his wife Barbara, offered a matching donation up to $10,000 for donations to AKC Pet Disaster Relief made before September 20 and that donation has already been met and matched!  Now the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America Charitable Trust has announced it will match the next $10,000 donated to AKC Pet Disaster Relief. So if you or your club donate $100, the Corgi Trust will also send $100 for a total donation of $200.

These are just some of the donations we’ve heard about and more are coming in almost hourly.
The Central New Jersey Hound Association ( CNJHA ) – $1,000.00
The Rhodesian Ridgeback Club – $1000.00
The Irish Water Spaniel Club of America – $1,000
Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America – $1000
Yorkshire Terrier Club of America – $500
The Rio Grande Kennel Club – $500
The Weimaraner Foundation Fund – $1500
Basset Hound Club of America Foundation – $2000 to AKC Reunite and another $2000 to the Houston SPCA
Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association – $1000
Great Dane Club of America – $1000
Salisbury Kennel Club – $2000.00
Greater Hickory Kennel Club – $2000.00
Carolina Working Group Association – $1000.00
Giant Schnauzer Club of America – $1500

As I you can see, the purebred dog community is coming together in a very big way to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Has your club given?

Of course it goes without saying, please do NOT send money to the ASPCA or HSUS (Humane Society of the United States). These organizations begin soliciting donations at the first hint of a disaster and raise millions, much of which is never used to help the animals. HSUS’s performance during Hurricane Katrina was appalling. These two organizations are “factory fundraisers” and are extremely misleading about where the donations go.
